Rookie Salary in the Draft

Post by Commissioner » Wed May 15, 2019 1:34 pm

Like the NFL in real life, our rookies drafted should have a staggered salary scale depending on where they are drafted. All rookies should not have the same salary at $1. The players taken early have a high expectation of producing and being valuable to fantasy vs the guys in Rounds 2, 3, and 4 are more crap shoots and most don't ever pan out. Why should they all have the same salary?

Example would be like,

Players taken First half of Round 1 (1st thru 8th overall) have a starting salary of $5. Then maybe second half of Round 1 (9th through 16) can be 4. Round 2 picks (1 thru 8) can be 3. Round 2 picks (9 thru 16) can be 2 and then Round 3 and 4 can all be $1.

Commissioner's Note: Since draft picks have been traded in both the upcoming 2019 and next year's 2020 draft, a rule like this, if approved, would go into effect starting with the 2021 draft. We've had two 2021 draft picks traded, but that is two years out so teams should be able to adjust to this rule in that amount of time if it is passed.

I wish this would have been the rule from the start, although I would structure like this.

Picks 49-64 = $1
Picks 33-48 = $2
Picks 25-32 = $3
Picks 17-24 = $4
Picks 13-16 = $5
Picks 9-12 = $6
Picks 4-8 = $7
Pick 3 = $8
Pick 2 = $9
Pick 1 = $10

All of that being said, I think it would be unfair to implement this rule after trades have been made involving these picks. While I agree with it, I would have to vote no for that reason.

I agree there should be some sort of rookie scale as the expectations are higher for rookies drafted higher as in the nfl. While Steelers is correct that some of us have traded picks for the current structure of this is implemented I’d say give this rule change two years since some have already traded for 2020 picks.

I think the gradual 5 to 1 amount change makes more sense than a 10 to 1. When you have a stud talent like Saquon, the 10 makes sense but like this draft, Jacobs for a 10 doesn't seem that reasonable, or anybody that comes after him.

I support the rule change, but I agree that it should not be implemented this season due to trades.

I'm on board with this change....definitely not the scale of 1-10 though.... I like James initial idea here of 1-5

I Agree with a scale of 5-1.

1st round - $5
2nd round - $4
3rd round -$3
4 and 5 - $1

I don't think all 1st rounders should be the same amount. The difference between pick 1.1 and pick 1.16 is enormous!

I went back through one of my dynasty leagues

1st Picks
2018 Saquon Barkley
2017 Leonard Fournette
2016 Ezekiel Elliott
2015 Todd Gurley
2014 Sammy Watkins
2013 Tony Gonzalez

16th Picks
2018 Courtland Sutton
2017 Curtis Samuel
2016 Leonte Caroo
2015 Maxx Williams
2014 Andre Williams
2013 Benjarvis Green-Ellis

The difference in production may be huge but the difference in their original salaries shouldn't be that different, if at all

Bonuses take care of that difference which are based on what they do after they are drafted.

I'm fine if we want to give rookies a salary scale so they aren't all $1, but I don't think the amount should really go beyond $5 for the #1 overall. I mean more rookies fail than succeed so I think their price and risk value still needs to remain low across the board.

I think we could stagger $5 through $1 amongst the 4 rounds of picks.

ANd obviously again this would be for 2021 and beyond.

After considering the scale my suggestion or opinion on this is :
1st rounders salary $3
2nd rounders $2
all others $1

I'd be fine with even doing this immediately

Yes. 5-1 scale.

Would not have any issues with implementing it now (although I traded my early 2019 picks, consider me biased).

i spoke my mind on the Topic "Remove the "no-bonus" award to Rookies".
Dont think this topic would make much of a difference.

I agree with Detroit, think a small increase will make no difference. Has to be a much larger increase or might as well just make this a dynasty league and keep players drafted forever. Same thing...
